Man wearing Invisalign clear aligner at Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics in Fairfield, OH 45014-7205There is a common misconception that orthodontists just help straighten teeth, but they are able to help you in a number of different ways related to your jaw and mouth. An orthodontist helps with alignment, protrusion, crookedness, and the appearance of the teeth. They also help with the alignment of the jaw, and pain associated with it.

Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics wants to help you reap the benefits of a straight smile. Healthy teeth lead to a healthy mouth. The treatment our orthodontists give you can last your whole life, and remove any issues you have permanently.

What Can an Orthodontist Help Me With?

Not only can our orthodontists straighten your teeth for aesthetic reasons, eliminating gaps or misalignment can help improve speaking and eating, and reduce the risk of developing gum disease and tooth decay. Due to the permanency of orthodontic treatment, you can reduce the possibility of developing oral complications if it was previously difficult to brush and clean the oral cavity.

Protruding teeth can cause oral issues, such as teeth grinding (bruxism) or gum damage. Realigning the teeth can prevent further damage down the line, and reduce the chances of chipping or cracking a tooth. Orthodontic treatment can be cost effective and a more desirable solution than surgical procedures that could arise from untreated teeth.

Devices and Appliances

There are many different forms of orthodontic treatment, some of which can be tailored towards the patients’ requirements. Our orthodontists aim to be as minimally invasive as possible.

Invisalign® is a see-through retainer that sits indistinguishably in the mouth. It acts as a normal retainer would, pushing the teeth into their correct place over time. Invisalign retainers are worn for two weeks at a time, and can be expected to take 12-18 months. Our orthodontist can show you at the start of the treatment how your teeth will look at the end, and how long it should take.

A palatal expander is used to widen the upper dental arch. This is used particularly for children, in order to make space for teeth that are still waiting to come through. The appliance is removable and often cannot be seen from the front of the mouth, as it sits on the roof of the mouth.

Braces are a non-removable form of orthodontic treatment that are commonly used in the mouths of teenagers and adults to straighten misaligned teeth. The appliance consists of bands, brackets, and wires that are tightened in order to pull the teeth into their correct placement. Over time, our orthodontist will adjust the braces to continually move the teeth into their optimal position.

The important aspect of orthodontic treatment to remember is that the appearance of appliances and devices has been greatly reduced in noticeability over the past few years. Invisalign is a practically invisible form of retainer, while braces use far less wires and less sizeable brackets than they did in the past.
