There are many forms of malocclusions or bad bites. A bad bite can lead to jaw issues, higher incidence of tooth decay and the wearing of your teeth. Common malocclusions include:
•  Overbite
•  Underbite
•  Crossbite
•  Overjet
•  Overcrowding
•  Gaps
•  Transposition

Orthodontics for Young Children

There is a common thought that braces and orthodontic work are specifically intended for older children or teens. This is untrue. The ideal age to begin orthodontics is at the age of seven when their bones are still growing, and the early stages of permanent teeth formation. Orthodontic treatment in young children is known as interceptive orthodontics. We may not necessarily place braces on your child at seven, but there are certain steps that we can take to better assist your child in having a healthier bite.

Early Orthodontic Intervention
By considering orthodontic treatment at a younger age, Dr. Nelson R. Diers can identify alignment issues in your child early on. Taking steps to intervene, we can promote healthier tooth development as permanent teeth are coming in. We can:
•  Guide permanent teeth as they begin to erupt into a better position.
•  Create space for permanent teeth by removing baby teeth and placing a spacer.
•  Create room in the arch for permanent teeth using a device called a palatal expander. This will expand the childs upper dental arch.

Early orthodontic treatment is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontics. Additionally, it can shorten and simplify any possible future treatment.

Orthodontics for Older Children and Teens

By the time your child is at or nearing their teens, most of their permanent teeth have come in. This is when a majority of parents consider having braces placed. There are many benefits to orthodontic work for your teens, including:
•  Shifting teeth that are overcrowded, crooked, or poorly positioned.
•  Improving your childs bite. Malocclusions are known for increasing problems with teeth wear, joint problems, and even hiding decay.
•  Increasing your teens self-confidence. Studies have shown that bad bites cause social anxiety in people. From hiding their smile to feeling that their appearance is less than attractive, teens do care about how they look.

Dr. Nelson R. Diers can evaluate your teen and make treatment recommendations based on their bite. Today, there are many options for teens to improve their bite. From traditional braces, to clear braces, to self-ligating braces and even clear plastic aligners that do not use brackets or wires at all, we can review each product with you and discuss the pros and cons to find the right fit for your teen.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® are clear plastic aligners, working as a modern twist on traditional braces. Instead of using brackets and wires, Dr. Nelson R. Diers customizes a series of dental appliances that you wear over your teeth. As the patient moves to the next aligner in the series, each appliance is designed to slowly shift your teeth into the desired position. Invisalign® is a great option for teens, especially teens who would like to have the freedom to remove the device when they play sports or instruments. Dr. Nelson R. Diers can provide you more information and determine if your teen is a good candidate.

Orthodontics for Adults

Increasingly, adults are seeking orthodontic care. Many adults want a professional look, and that includes a beautiful smile. We also want to see your beautiful smile, and additionally, we want your smile to be healthy. Orthodontics can play a powerful role in improving the look of your smile, helping you light up a room.

Adults have many options when considering their orthodontic work. From varying styles of braces to Invisalign®, to even placing caps or veneers, we can make a dramatic difference in your smile.
Often adults express concern about not wanting to have the juvenile look of braces. Additionally, adults' teeth don't move as easily or painlessly as children or teens' do. Your permanent teeth are in place, and your bone has stopped growing, so you can expect some discomfort when having your braces initially placed and with adjustments. The upside is that there are many options in braces and orthodontic appliances today. Dr. Nelson R. Diers can review these options with you and help you decide what treatment is best for your needs.

Variations on braces include:
•  MetalMetal braces are the traditional braces that are most common. The difference today is that the brackets are significantly smaller in size, making them less noticeable.
•  Ceramic:Ceramic braces are created to match the coloring of your teeth, helping them hide in your mouth.
•  Lingual:Lingual braces are designed to be discreet. They are placed on the backside of your teeth instead of the face of your teeth.
•  Clear:Clear brackets can likewise assist your brackets from being nearly invisible in your mouth.

With other options such as self-ligating wires and Invisalign®, patients today have more options than ever before. You can straighten your teeth the way that works best for you.
