Caring for Your Aligners

Orthodontic aligners provide a happy smile in Fairfield, OHAligners like Invisalign have provided dental patients wishing to improve the quality of their smile with straighter teeth a way to achieve these goals without the use of metal brackets and wires. In fact, one of the greatest benefits of aligners is that they are completely clear, meaning that they disappear from view when they are placed in your mouth. No one can tell that they are there unless you mention it. Another significant benefit is that they are much easier to care for than traditional braces. One of the contributing factors for this benefit is that they are removable, instead of bonded into place on you your teeth. While aligners do not require the same time intensive care as braces, they still require proper care to help you achieve optimal results and Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics is here to help.

Remove When Eating or Drinking

Aligners are removable. They are meant to be taken out whenever you eat or drink something. Eating with your aligners in can cause damage that can interfere with your treatment. Additionally, certain types of food and drinks contain heavy concentrations of dark pigments. These can stain the aligners, making them more visible in your mouth. Before you replace your aligners in your mouth after eating, it is important that you rinse them. This will remove any plaque and bacteria that may have accumulated.

Proper Storage for Your Aligners

Whenever you take out your aligners, store them in their protective case. This will help to prevent them from getting lost at the dinner table or forgotten if you are eating out at a restaurant. Keeping them in their case in a safe location will also keep them away from curious younger children as well as curious pets.

If You Play Sports

If you play contact sports, a mouth guard is essential for protecting your teeth and your mouth. With traditional braces, playing a contact sport requires a special mouth guard that can be worn over your orthodontic appliances. However, because the aligners are removable, you can simply take them out and wear your regular mouth guard. If you play sports that do not require a mouth guard, you can just leave your aligners in as normal.

Oral Hygiene with Aligners

Oral hygiene is critical for the prevention of serious issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. Traditional braces are well-known for making proper oral hygiene difficult. Having to brush and floss around and under brackets and wires can be tedious and there are numerous places where bacteria and plaque can hide, greatly increasing the risk of decalcification, decay, and cavities.
Aligners have the distinct advantage of being removable. This means that you can brush and floss your teeth as normal. It is important that you brush and floss regularly. Neglecting your oral enables your aligners to trap food particles and debris against your teeth, which can lead to later dental problems. In addition to brushing and flossing your teeth, however, it is also important that you clean your aligners. Brush the aligners gently to avoid the formation of tiny scratches. Any scratches in your aligners can provide a hiding place for bacteria.

Taking care of your aligners both ensures that you achieve the best possible results from your orthodontic treatment and that your mouth remains healthy in the process. For more information about the care of your aligners, call Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics at (513) 829-4400 today.
